Celebration of Astronomy Day and Earth Day at Gujarat Science City

Gujarat Science City is organizing various activities to mark the celebration of Astronomy Day on 21st April and Earth Day on 22nd April 2007. The celebration aims to share the joy of science of astronomy and our planet earth for the children as well as the general public.

The theme of Astronomy Day is 'Bringing Astronomy to the People' and the same for Earth Day is 'Global Warming'.

Astronomy Day gives an opportunity to thousands of children and the common people who have never looked through a telescope, will have an opportunity to see first hand what has so many amateur and professional astronomers all excited.

The main purpose is to create awareness that helps highlight ways the general public can get involved with astronomy - or at least get some of their questions about astronomy answered.

Earth Day provides an opportunity to renew the fight to protect our environment every day. This year theme involves a global campaign focused on solutions to climate change. The campaign aims to educate and motivate all levels of the global community including school and college students, governments, corporations, and religious institutions about the art and science of global warming.

The Gujarat Science City organizing illustrative poster exhibition on the theme, popular science talk and interaction by eminent scientists, sky observation by telescopes, screening of astronomy films on LED screen. Students can participate in the astronomy and Earth quest competition to be held on both days between 15.00 to 17.00 hrs. Eminent astrophysicist Dr. Pankaj Joshi will deliver a popular science lecture on 'Tara Shrushti' at 5.30 pm in Auditorium I. On 22nd April 2007, there will be a special screening of 'an inconvenient truth', a film on global warming in Auditorium I between 2.00 to 4.00 pm.

Working under the aegis of Department of Science & Technology, Government of Gujarat, the Science City is taking a bold step by bringing awareness and sensitizing the visitors about the wonder world of science and technology. Visitors may explore the marvel of science in the Hall of Science, experience the IMAX movies, quest for new knowledge at Children Activity Centre, learn all about energy in the Energy Education Park and spare the evening at the grand Musical Fountain inside the Science City campus. School children from Std. I to Std. XII may join in the Summer Science Program during May-June 2007.

We take this opportunity to invite one and all to be a part of this celebration.
