Energy Park

State Level Energy Education Park (SEEP), spreading over a hexagonal grid pattern area measuring 9000 sq.m is being developed at the Gujarat Science City. Gujarat Science City has received a financial assistance from the Ministry of Non-conventional Energy Sources (MNES) and the work has been executed in association with Gujarat Energy Development Agency (GEDA).

he Energy Park exhibits are classified according to five basic elements (Panchbhuta) as propounded in ancient Indian Philosophy. These elements are (i) Tej (Energy from the Sun), (ii) Marut (Energy from the Wind), (iii) Ap (Energy from the Water), (iv) Kshiti (Energy from the Earth) and (v) Byom (Exploration of space).

he civil and land scaping work is almost in completion stage. Exhibits on wind energy, solar energy, petroleum rigs, Sardar Sarovar Dam etc. have been installed and some are in progress.

nergy Plantation work has just started over an area of 2 hectare land.

wo number of Battery Operated Passenger Vehicle has been ordered from BHEL, one delivered and other one in pipeline.

WIND ENERGY

Along with sun, it was the air, which showed man its power. Even before the solar energy, it was the wind energy that man used for his work. Initially, it was used in two main ways; to drive wind mills on land and to drive sailing vessels at sea. The first use of windmills were to grind foods grains and to run pumps to irrigate. Now with the advancement of science and technology, we have windmills generating electricity. Naturally, now this energy can be used for many more works.

WIND MILL PUMP

Here the rotating blades of the windmill give vertical movement to the rod. This rod acts like the rod of hand pump and lifts water from the tank. It can be used for any purpose. Right from water for irrigation to pumping water for other uses.

WIND TURBINE

Here the rotating blades of the windmill generate electricity through the rotary motion of the generator. This generator is fitted at the top of the mill near the blades. The electricity passes to the control house. Here in this model, series of electric bulbs glow whenever there is windmill generated electricity.

An array of such windmills is a windfarm, which produces electricity in large quantity. This electricity can be taken to considerable distances.

DRILLING FOR OIL AND GAS

This is a typical structure of a rig used for drilling oil and well on land. It is only after drilling a well it is found whether there is oil or gas or both or nothing. Despite all scientific advancement finding oil and gas from a well is not always certain.

The most popular method of drilling an oil well is called “Rotary drilling method.”

In this method whole is drilled quicky and greater depths are reached faster.

HOUSE OF POLYMERS

Crude oil or the black gold is not just a fuel which we use as Diesel, Petrol, or Kerosene.

The crude oil, greenish-black sticky liquid, is refined in refinary. Besides fuels we get number of other products which make our world more versatile. This is because petroleum is also a raw material for over half a million organic chemicals. They are known as petrochemicals. In this petro house everything is made of petrochemicals.

Can you imagine the world without the peroproducts?

GEO THERMAL ENERGY-POWER FROM THE DEPTHS

Hot water springs are the best examples of the Geo thermal energy. Many of us have direct experience of this energy from beneath the surface of the earth. The earth’s centre is 6400 Kms deep. How hot is this region ? Our best guess is 4000 degree C. Heat is constantly flowing from earth’s interior to surface. The steam energy from under the surface of earth provides over 44 billion kilo watt hour of electricity world wide per year.

To produce electric power from geo thermal resources, under ground reservoirs of steam Or hot water are tapped by wells and the steam rotates turbines that generate electricity in India, the geological survey of India has already identified more than 350 hot springs sites which can be explored as areas to top geo thermal energy.

This interactive model shows the use of geo thermal energy.

TIDAL POWER GENERATOR

Tides and ebbs can run turbines to generate electricity . But for this there should be a minimum difference of 15 feet between high tide and low tide or ebb. The water high tide Turns wheels of turbine while going and receding water of low tide also turn the wheels. This movement generates electricity. In a little more than 24 hours we have four Tides and ebbs.

However, there are only 40 sites on the earth with tidal ranges of this magnitude. This model shows the use of tidal energy to generate electricity. France’s La Rance station is the only industrial-sized tidal power station in the world which produces 240 MW of power.

OCEAN THERMAL ENERGY CONVERTER

Different layer of sea have different temperature. This difference in temperature is used to generate electricity through ocean thermal energy converter. However, it works best when difference between the warmer, top layer of the ocean and the colder, deep ocean water is about 20degree C. The idea was first floted by Jacques Arsene d’Avsonaval a French physicist in 1881.But first plant has built by his student George Claude in cuba in 1930. It produced 22KW of electricity with a low pressure turbine. Here is an interactive exhibit of OTEC plant.

WAVE POWER GENERATION

Wind energy creates ocean waves. Each wave can travel a long distance without losing much energy. Strong steady winds produce waves that travel up to 56 miles per hour.

This energy of waves is be used to move turbines which generates electricity. Experts estimate that wave energy has potential to provide up to 10% of the world’s electricity.

The only problem is to keep the structure intact in the sea. Despite that there are many wave power plants in the world.

In this interactive exhibit you can generate wave in the pool of water which in turn generate electricity. You can witness the result of your own efforts .

SOLAR HOUSE

Generally people think that though solar energy is cheap it has limited use and it is not convenient to use. However, recent advances in technology have made use of solar energy easy and cheap. In both forms, thermal and electrical form. Here, in this solar Hut, right from kitchen tap to T. V. and refrigerator all are run on solar energy. Series of batteries store electrical energy generated by panel of PV cells at the roof top .

This electrical energy is fed into inverter for use to run T.V. refrigerator , fans and so on.

You can also cook your food through solar cooker.

Solar water heating system , solar still kept out side take care of need for water in the house. While solar lantern provides emergency light. Do not worry, solar energy has no transmission problem.
