International Literacy Day
International Literacy Day
September 8 is being celebrated as International Literacy Day, the day that reminds about the importance of literacy for individuals, families, communities and whole societies. It is an occasion to give hope to the millions of women, men and children who cannot read or write even their own names.
The theme of the International Literacy Day 2007 is "Literacy, key to good health and well-being". This emphasizes that literacy is not only a positive outcome of development processes but also a lever of change and an instrument for achieving further social progress.
Literacy is not merely a cognitive skill of reading, writing and arithmetic, for literacy helps in the acquisition of learning and life skills that, when strengthened by usage and application throughout people’s lives, lead to forms of individual, community and societal development that are sustainable.
Gujarat Science City working under the aegis of Department of Science & technology, Government of Gujarat is emerging as a large scale science popularization platform to inculcate scientific temper among the children as well as to disseminate science literacy in the society. With its multi-disciplinary programmes and participant-oriented approach, the Gujarat Science City is capturing new heights in science literacy.
The broad objective of these programs is to create and sustain a culture of learning that fosters the process of personal inquisitive, experimentation, communication, documentation, understanding, and the sharing of values about our science and society.
On this auspicious day, let’s try to spread the spirit of literacy among one and all in the society so that everybody may cope with the fast-paced changes of today and tomorrow.
