Popular Science Lecture on "Amazing World of Stem Cells"
Tuesday, 26th June 2007: 3.30 to 5.00 pm, Auditorium I in Gujarat Science City
The Gujarat Science City is announcing the popular science lecture on the topic 'Amazing World of Stem Cells' to be delivered by Dr. H. L. Trivedi, Director, Institute for Kidney Diseases and Research Centre, Ahmedabad on the Tuesday, 26th June 2007 at 3.30 pm in Auditorium I.
The lecture is a part of the popular science lecture series titled as "SCIENCE MATTERS" that aims to bring awareness among the young students, parents, teachers and the media persons about the fascinating world of basic sciences and its promising future. The series deals with topics on frontier areas of science and technology for the spreading of new knowledge and awareness among the students as well as the public at large.
Stem cells have the remarkable potential to develop into many different cell types in the body. Serving as a sort of repair system for the body, they can theoretically divide without limit to replenish other cells as long as the person or animal is still alive. When a stem cell divides, each new cell has the potential to either remain a stem cell or become another type of cell with a more specialized function, such as a muscle cell, a red blood cell, or a brain cell.
The talk will explore about Stem Cells and the enormous and exciting possibilities they hold for future treatment of some of the most debilitating diseases like Cancer and Parkinson's; heart ailments, blindness; problems with repair of teeth, skin and bones; re-growing of damaged parts of liver, other organs and limbs; and so on and on.
There are many ways in which human stem cells can be used in basic research and in clinical research. However, there are many technical hurdles between the promise of stem cells and the realization of these uses, which will only be overcome by continued intensive stem cell research.
Prof. H. L. Trivedi is an international repute physician and pioneer in stem cell research and its transplantation. With an outstanding clinical research and innovation, he has set many success indicators in the stem cell transplantation science.
Dr Trivedi, over the years, has delivered many a memorial lecture, inaugural address and convocation address and published research articles in various journals in India and abroad. He has also chaired sessions at national and international seminars, symposia and conferences on transplantation sciences.
Recipient of a number of national honours, awards, felicitations and citations, Dr Trivedi has been recently conferred with Lifetime Achievement Award for the significant contributions for Hypertension and Kidney Disorder in India by the Trust Hospital (a unit of Madras Kidney Trust & Hypertension Research Foundation) on 22nd April 2007.
The interaction on stem cell will describe many more examples and experiences by the legendary physician and expert in transplantation science, who has the power to create, the ability to lead and the foresight to build the future today.
We cordially invite one and all to attend the programme at Auditorium I in the Science City.
