Exposition on Science, Technology & Society to mark the National Science Day
The Gujarat Science City is organizing a week-long science festival during 22nd to 28th February 2007 to mark the celebration of 21st National Science Day on 28th February 2007. The programme is titled as Science Expo 2007; an exposition for science, technology and society interface that aims at high school and college level student and the public with an endeavour to promote and spread scientific awareness.
Science Expo:
Science Expo programme will include exhibitions by the scientific institutions and organization based in Gujarat, highlighting the current research and development work in respective field and how it can impact and influence the society.
A large number of school and college students to visit the exhibition and to take active part in various student activities, workshops, competitions, film shows, experiment and demonstrations, sky observation and popular science lectures, etc during the above programme.
The National Science Day is being observed every year on 28th February to mark the novel discovery of Raman Effect by Sir C. V. Raman on February 28th, 1928. It was the initiative of National Council for Science & Technology Communication (NCSTC), Department of Science & Technology, Government of India, by which February 28 was designated as National Science Day in 1987. Since then this day is celebrated throughout the country with great enthusiasm. It is a great day for Indian science and scientific community. It offers an opportunity to bring issues of science on to centre stage.
The theme of this year's celebration is "More Crop Per Drop".
This is for the first time; most of the premier scientific institutions in and around Gujarat and some of the national organizations are participating together in Science Expo platform to interact with large number of school and college students. Fifty institutions like Physical Research Laboratory, Institute of Plasma Research, National Institute of Occupational Health, Vigyan Prasar, Educational Media Research Centre, Water & Sanitation Management Organisation, Directorate of Forensic Laboratory, GEER Foundation, Centre for Environment Education, Entrepreneurial Development Institute, Indo German Tool Room, Indian Meteorological Department, GSDMA -UNDP, L. D. College of Engineering, Indian Red Cross Society, GUJCOST, DST and many more are extended their support to Science City to bring science into society.
Shri Raj Kumar, IAS, Secretary, Department of Science & Technology, Government of Gujarat has been consented to inaugurate the Science Expo 2007 programme tomorrow at 2.30 pm.
Cosmic Illusion:
Science Expo also includes popular science lectures on cutting edge of science & technology. The first day of the expo will deliver a lecture on Cosmic Illusion by Padma Vibhushan Prof. Jayant V. Narlikar, who is an international fame scientist on astrophysics on 22nd Feb 2007 at 3.00 pm.
This talk on "Cosmic Illusion" will show that gravity can bend light and lead to lensing effects in space. On a large scale, astronomers find that this leads to illusory effects like several images of a single source of light, abnormally bright images, and also unusually magnified sizes. Some examples of this phenomenon will be presented. The moral for the astronomer
is: Seeing is not believing!
All these activities aim to inculcate scientific temper and understanding about our own planet and its rich resources. Working under the aegis of DST, Govt of Gujarat, the Science City is emerging as a large scale science popularization platform in the country by organizing several scientific programmes and educational activities regularly that depict various scientific themes linked with the day-to-day life. These will help in bringing scientific temper, attitude and deploying science for awareness and empowerment of the community.
In addition, the school children and visitors may explore the marvel of science in the Hall of Science, experience the IMAX 3D movies, the concept and sources of energy in the Energy Education Park, Life Science Park and spare the evening at the grand Musical Fountain inside the Science City campus. Free bus facilities have been arranged for the Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar school students.
