Basic Science Gallery

ith a new breed of working exhibits, visitors would discover science by themselves in the Basic Science Gallery at the Gujarat Science City. They will turn handles, press buttons, look through peepholes, perform fascinating experiments and be amazed at their own capability of making things work.

his is a place that does not have a display “please don’t touch”. This new exhibit hall in the Science City urges the visitors to touch and manipulate the exhibits to their liking.

esigned an area of 20,000 square foot area, the Basic Science Gallery is full of fantasy and excitement. The exhibits in this hall aim to bring across to the visitor the principles governing the everyday phenomena. The experience has been made as interactive as possible with the help of working models that demonstrates the laws of physics, chemistry, biology, etc., in an interesting manner and also the achievements of India in this field.

verybody talks about conservation of energy these days. But what is Energy in the first instance – how is it transformed from sound to light to electricity to magnetism and so on ? Here you can produce electricity through your own body, make your own magnet, get electricity from the Sun. A giant Energy Ball demonstrates how earth’s gravitational force makes some balls rolling and performing like acrobats to produce sound, light, electricity and kinetic energy in different forms. It is an experience to watch this kinetic sculpture for hours.

ou just paddle on a bicycle and generate electricity to light up the lamps and run a TV system where your own image will appear. Paddle hard to generate more power to light up more lamps. Then you learn to transmit the power through pulleys, gears and linkages. Lift yourself up by pulling a rope, spin on a chair to experience how the ballet dancers spin fast on their toes, and simulate the planetary motion to watch how the planets move faster while coming closer to the Sun.

he Aquamobil is a kinetic water sculpture in which colourful water plays with water wheels, turbines, dancing dolls; makes a giant water lens, sounds musical chimes and gongs, generates electricity, and operates bubblers and fountains to demonstrate basic laws of fluids. A hot air balloon soars up when heated, you can paddle a bicycle to float a ball in air, control a floating ball in air like an aeroplane and operate a pneumatic mail from one point to the other.

n the new exhibit hall, mathematics is all fun, pendulum is a moving beauty creating different kinds of motions and patterns, and mirrors create magic. You can cut off your head and offer to others on a silver platter. You can fly in air, and many more.

The major exhibit enclaves are as follows:
  • Transformation of Energy
  • Aquamobil
  • Mechanics and Mirrors
  • Light Island
  • Sound, Mathematics, Fluidics
  • Additional exhibits on sound and plasma
  • Spark Theatre
ore than 100 more interactive exhibits on different disciplines of basic science have been installed for exploration of scientific principles.
