The SCIENCE Detectives: using science to unravel truth
The Gujarat Science City is announcing the popular science lecture on the topic "The Science Detectives: using science to unravel truth" to be delivered by Dr. Jayant M. Vyas, Director, State Forensic Laboratory, Gandhinagar on the Saturday, the 30th September 2006 at 3.00 pm in Auditorium I.
The lecture is fourth of its series titled as "Science Matters" that aims to bring awareness among the young students, parents, teachers and the media persons about the fascinating world of basic sciences and its promising future. The series deals with topics on frontier areas of science and technology for the spreading of new knowledge and awareness among the students as well as the public at large.
The Science Detectives will discuss about nature and methods of forensic sciences. The genesis of the word "Forensic" dates back to the ancient Roman civilization, when open Courts or Forum were held at market places known as "Forensic". Later "Forensic" got evolved progressively so as to appreciate the fact that medical knowledge could be applied for the elucidation of doubtful questions in a court of justice.
Science has enlarged the dimensions of crime, changed the orientation of the criminal, given him an arsenal of scientific tools to act with, and affected his mode of operation and method of escape. It is, therefore, natural that Biologists, Serologists, Chemists, Physicists, medical men and scientists from other fields are expected to aid the police in the detection of crime of the day, and the courts in the dispensation of justice through science. Thus, forensic science has many aspect of science as it relates to the law.
In modern civilization with all its interests, inherited urbanized concepts and activities, industrial developments and novelties in Technology, the expectation out of the word "Forensic" has been enormous. Today, forensic science does not confine to matters relating to crime alone. It has become the ever-expanding branch of applied science to unravel the mysteries in civil, criminal, regulatory and even non-litigious matters. It aims to overtake the ingenuity of the criminal and serve the society.
The Science Detectives will explore on the multifaceted aspects of forensic science and the emerging multi-disciplinary branches like forensic physics, forensic chemistry, forensic biology and so on. The interaction will provide clarity on the role forensic science in order to fight crime and to unravel the truth.
Dr. Jayant M. Vyas, an eminent analytical scientist with many important innovations in his field. He is the recipient of President's Police Medal for meritorious services in the field of crime investigation on the eve of Republic Day 1997.
