The Gujarat Science City is organizing a four days Orientation Programme on National & International Science Olympiads for the meritorious students of Std XI and XII at Gujarat Science City during 1st to 4th September 2006.

The programme aims to aware the toppers of the SSC examination to know and enroll for the National and International Science Olympiads in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology and Astronomy, which have been organizing every year by Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education of Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai to achieve academic excellence.

The students will take a comprehensive lesson and activities on the syllabus, reference book and practicing techniques as well as how to be successful in the above examination. Eminent Scientists and Faculties from premier scientific institutions, namely, Prof. Vijay Singh, National Coordinator, Science Olympiads, Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE), Prof Bharat Chattoo, Department of Microbiology and Biotechnology Centre, M. S. University, Baroda, Prof. Arum M. Vaidya, Department of Mathematics, Gujarat University, Prof. D. V. Prabhu, Head, Department of Chemistry, Wilson College, Mumbai, Dr. Rekha Vartak, HBCSE, Prof. K. N. Joshipura, S. P. Every year the Science Olympiad on the above subjects have been conducted by the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education of Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai. About 30,000 to 40,000 students enrolled for these prestigious event and finally 20 students selected to represent India at different science subjects at the International Science Olympiads. However, the enrollment of Gujarat students to this prestigious event is not satisfactory as compared to other states.

The Science Olympiads in physics, chemistry, mathematics, biology and astronomy have been organized in four different stages. The fist stage is national standard examination in the respective subject. The selected students will be eligible for the second stage, i.e., the Indian National Olympiads in the above subjects. The third stage is the selection and training of teams for International science Olympiads and the final and fourth stage is the International Science Olympiad competitions. However, the first entry is through the national standard examination, which is scheduled to be held on 26th November 2006. The last date for enrollment in the different subjects of Olympiad is 15th September 2006.

Gujarat Science City in association with the Department of Education, Govt of Gujarat is taking a bold step by introducing Junior Science Olympiads for the secondary school students so that they can excel in their board examination as well to prepare themselves for the national and international science Olympiads in latter stage.

Science Olympiads are an exhilarating and uplifting movement for students, teachers and the organizers. Keen interest in subject, inventiveness, critical analysis, creativity and perseverance are necessary to tackle the task in the Olympiad.
