News Total Solar Eclipse
On the Wednesday, 22 July 2009, a total eclipse of the Sun is visible from within a narrow corridor that traverses half of Earth. Interestingly, the path of the Moon's shadow begins in India and crosses through Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Myanmar and China. After leaving mainland Asia, the path crosses Japan's Ryukyu Islands and curves southeast through the Pacific Ocean where the maximum duration of totality reaches 6 min 39 s.

Totality will be visible in many cities such as Surat, Varanasi, Patna, Thimphu, Chengdu, Chongqing, Wuhan, Hangzhou and Shanghai, as well as over the Three Gorges Dam.
In Surat, the Total Solar Eclipse will be seen on 22nd July 2009 from early morning 05:28 hrs to 07:40 hrs (Indian Standard Time). The total solar eclipse will last nearly four minutes — from 6.26 am to 6.30 am — in India and the sun will not be visible at all.
This solar eclipse is the longest total solar eclipse that will occur in the twenty-first century, and will not be surpassed in duration until next 123 years, i.e., June 13, 2132. Totality will last for up to 6 minutes and 39 seconds.
For everybody, the eclipse is a unique opportunity to admire and celebrate the beauty and inspiration of the celestial experience.
The experience of such a moment triggers questions on the cosmos, our Earth in space, and our human condition – a shared unforgettable experience that crosses boundaries of language, race, religion and culture.
Government of Gujarat has made elaborate arrangements to popularize the science of eclipse among the children and community members across the state. The Department of Science & Technology, Department of Tourism and the District Administration of Surat are identifying various eclipse viewing places and out reach programmes and activities for one and all.

Eclipse Chasers wish to see the eclipse at SURAT in Gujarat, please registered their details as per the prescribed form in on-line.
