Where and when will the total eclipse be visible?
On Wednesday, 22 July 2009, the total eclipse of the Sun is visible from within a narrow corridor that traverses half of Earth. Interestingly, the path of the Moon's shadow begins in India and crosses through Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Myanmar and China. After leaving mainland Asia, the path crosses Japan's Ryukyu Islands and curves southeast through the Pacific Ocean where the maximum duration of totality reaches 6 min 39 s.

Totality will be visible in many cities such as Surat, Varanasi, Patna, Thimphu, Chengdu, Chongqing, Wuhan, Hangzhou and Shanghai, as well as over the Three Gorges Dam.

In Surat, the Total Solar Eclipse will be seen on 22nd July 2009 from early morning 05:28 hrs to 07:40 hrs (Indian Standard Time). The total solar eclipse will last nearly four minutes — from 6.26 am to 6.30 am — in India and the sun will not be visible at all. Other places beyond the path of totality will seen the partial eclipse.
